Underground River

Río Secreto

Río Secreto could very well be one of the great world wonders. Experience this stunning underground river with thousands of dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. It's like stepping back in time to witness something mysterious and truly spectacular.

Rio Secreto is the Mayan Riviera's newest Cenote. It was only discovered just 7 years ago.Visiting this pristine cave system is an incredible experience. It is truly a wonder of Mexico and has recently been designated one of Mexico’s most distinct and alluring nature reserves.

There is 12 km of underground rivers .The magic of the Rio Secreto cave system is that there are 15 different entrances.

Being split up into smaller groups allows for a more intimate experience and gives you the time to really enjoy the caves.Caves like this were often used for human & animal sacrifice, and even today many local Maya keep clear of them.

In 2007 Rio Secreto’s owner decided to allow eco-tours through 10% of the natural reserve, in order to fund conservation for the rest of it.Rio Secreto is a maze of passageways and dramatic mineral formations. Water drips lightly from the ends of stalactites on the ceiling into the pristine blue pools at our feet. This water has slowly filtered through the porous rock, which is why it’s so clean.
