Billy Owen: A Cancer Survivor Loses Eye, Becomes a Zombie Actor
Billy Owen has lost his entire right eyeball and many nerves and muscles around that area to Sinonasal Undifferentiated Carcinoma (SUDC). Someone in his position would have to go through rehab or some kind of therapy to recuperate from the experience and accept that they’d have to live the remainder of their lives as a walking “Freakshow”. But he’s embraced it, and plans to use his naturally scary features to work in movies…as a zombie.
Doctors originally diagnosed his recurring headaches and breathing problems as sinusitis but when he finally saw a specialist it was clear he had a rare form of cancer (SUDC). On top of that, this type of cancer has a 10% survival rate and people with a high chance of survival have the tumours removed at an early stage.
Billy describes his experience as spiritual, saying he felt the touch of God. He said he used to be a big drinker before the incident but now he has his act together. He also quit his previous job as a mechanic since he couldn’t put anyone at risk if he missed something while fixing a car.
Even though Billy was extensively affected, his surgery went well and though he’s now missing half his face, he has embraced this and is now putting it to work scaring people on the screen.
He works in music videos and haunted houses like The Goretorium in Las Vegas. He has also appeared at the Venice Beach “Freakshow” to tell his story and has been featured on the AMC reality series.
Ever since his appearance on the series, his notoriety has increased. He said, “One guy wants to make me a custom eye patch.” In the end though, all he wants to do is be the main breadwinner for his family.
